medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. September) is the feast day of:
Maternus (d. c. 325) Maternus is the first definitely known bishop
of Cologne. According to a charming ninth-century legend, he lived
much earlier and was in fact the resurrected son of the widow of Nain
(Luke 7:11-15), later sent to Gaul by St. Peter. There he died a
SECOND time, but was resurrected by having St. Peter's staff laid on
his body.
The Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Commemorating the recovery of the
True Cross from the Persians by Emperor Heraclius (and supporting
cast) in the early seventh century.
Notburga (d. 1313) Notburga was a Tyrolean peasant who became a
kitchen maid in service to the local count. She was dismissed
because she kept giving food away to the poor. But when the wife who
dismissed N. died the count re-hired her, because he had had a run of
bad luck ever since N. was sent away. She lived the rest of her life
as his housekeeper. Her local cult won formal approval in 1862.
A modern saint: Gabriel John Tauin de-Fresse (d. 1815) GJTdF went as
a missionary to China in 1777, where he became bishop of Tabraca in
1800. After 15 years of dodging government persecution, he was
denounced to the authorities by a native Christian and beheaded. He
was beatified in 1900.
FYI: If my posts stop for a few days, it means that southern
Mississippi got hit in the head by a hurricane. . . . .
