OSX folk, and possibly Steve,
The following message appeared on a Java-on-OSX list, and might be of
some interest to OSX folk.
The 1.4.1 release note mentioned below says

And it goes on to say that folk using 10.2 have only Java 1.3.1 by
default, and would have to install 1.4.1 deliberately (on 10.3 the
default Java is 1.4.1)
