Yet another user report. I've used the DM-20 over the last 4 months for some
60 semi-structured interview in different environments, including bars,
restaurants as well as quiet meeting rooms. Given the right microphone for
the right place, quality is outstanding. I generally record stereo, 44.1. At
this rate you get 4.5 h recording. I have used it once for a presentation
and group discussion in a small room, just audible but very low noise.
Managed to transcribe.
Files get encoded in WMA 64 kbps at this rate - then I edit with a range of
tools depending on occasion, including Olympus native software, MS
MovieMaker and (freeware) Moviepro. I generally burn some 25 interviews to
CD and send to transcriber, who seems to be happy with format. Battery time
is about 10 hr so far, which is not too bad.
Ah, and I bought it in Singapore, which makes it more affordable :)
Minus is no solid state, so there's always a slight worry something will go
wrong. But so far so good, not even a glitch. I think I'll get myself a sony
MD for backup purposes, you never know...

Subject: Re: digital vs mini-disc recorders
I can't compare the two formats, I can say that if you go with a digital
recorder you want to make sure it records at the highest frequency possible.
I started with an Olympus DS-330 but found the sound quality at its highest
setting annoying at best and leading to data loss at worst. I bought the
DM-10, which samples at 44.1 kHz rather than 12 kHz; what a difference. It's
as good as any tape recorder I've ever used. I'd highly recommend it (though
wish it used cards to store data on, and I wish I could afford the
DM-20--more memory).
