CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

2nd International Conference: Clinical Ethics Consultation

Basel, Switzerland

March 17-20, 2005
Website: http://www.iaeme.ch/

Last Date: March 1st, 2005

INTRODUCTION

You are invited to submit an abstract for presentation at the Second
International Conference - Clinical Ethics Consultation that will be
held on March 17th - 20th, 2005 at the University of Basel, Switzerland.
The special focus of this meeting is the assessment of the current state
of the art and issues affecting ethics consultation.

CONFERENCE OUTLINE

Why is Clinical Ethics Consultation a theme that justifies holding a
second conference? The rapid changes in medical science and technology,
the acknowledged rights of patients, an internationally aging
population, and concerns regarding resource scarcity, all lead to the
medical professions being increasingly required to balance quality,
ethical issues, and resource allocation in the exercising of their
professional duties. Thus clinical ethics, and the need for ethics
consultation at the bedside has grown in importance in the increasingly
difficult decision making process, particularly regarding critical
treatment decisions and end of life care. Clinical ethics consultation
has proved to help protect the rights of patients; it can educate
thoughtful and responsible decisions being made, and can support the
well being of those involved in difficult clinical settings, as well as
the patient's family members. Deliberating ethical and practical
questions in patient care takes place in many ways and forms which are
more or less structured or professionalized. Amongst the Clinical Ethics
Support Services present in many countries, a variety of approaches are
under discussion: hospital ethics committees, guidelines, education, as
well as focused clinical ethics consultation services. The latter will
be in the center of the Conference Program, thus allowing for an
in-depth insight into its clinical benefits, methodological and
organisational qualities, in combination with other approaches.
