'Austria in Exile'
14 - 16 September 2005
Co-Ordinators: The Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies
The Research Centre will be holding its triennial conference on the
experience of German-speaking refugees from National Socialism from
Wednesday, 14 to Friday, 16 September 2005. The title of the conference
will be 'Austria in Exile', and proposals for papers (not exceeding
thirty minutes) on this topic are invited. Contributions can be on any
aspect of this subject, in English or German, especially on the
following specific areas where refugees from Austria were/are active:
* Politics and public life
* Arts, culture, literature and music
* Theatre and film
* Intellectual and academic life
* Science, technology and medicine
* Psychoanalysis and psychology
* Industry, commerce and business enterprises
* Publishing, journalism and the service industries
* Austrian organisations in exile
* Internment, the war effort and military service
* Jewish life and Judaism
* 'Remigration' back to Austria
* Settlement in Britain
Proposals, not exceeding 200 words, should be sent by 1 December 2004 to
the Secretary of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile
Studies, Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, 29 Russell Square,
GB-London WC1B 5DP. Contributors will be informed of the provisional
programme by 1 February 2005. Papers will be published in volume 8 of
the Research Centre's Yearbook (2006), subject to approval by the
editors. Manuscripts for publication must be submitted in final form by
31 January 2006.
