Conference at the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of London
Thomas Mann
17-18 March 2005
In commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Thomas Mann, the English Goethe Society, in conjunction with the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, is organising a two-day conference to take stock of Mann's reputation in the early 21st century. Topics will include Mann's intertextual relationships to his literary and philosophical ancestors, the nature of literary achievement (the strengths and limitations of his particular understanding of a fiction of ideas), and the reception of his work. What does he have to say to us today in our (postmodern) climate? Jeffrey Berlin (Pennsylvania), Paul Bishop (Glasgow), T.J. Reed and Ritchie Robertson (Oxford) will be among the speakers.
