Conference at the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of London
Friedrich Schiller
24-25 January 2005
2005 sees the bicentenary of Schiller's death. To mark the occasion, the English Goethe Society, in collaboration with the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, is mounting a two-day conference to explore Schiller's importance for us today. Various strands run through the programme:
- Schiller the dramatist
- Schiller the poet
- Schiller the discursive writer
Two sections will explore questions to do with his reception - within various national traditions, and by artists such as Verdi, George Grosz, and Thomas Mann. The conference will be complemented by the Wilkinson and Willoughby Lecture which this year will be given by T.J. Reed (Oxford).
