"FDA concession review committee host sanctions meeting
Environmental & Natural Resources Advisors (ENRA), together with Civil
Affairs Officers and NGO representatives, attended a meeting held by the
Forestry Development Authority (FDA) Concession Review Committee. The
Committee to Review Sanctions on timber and its trade is currently
evaluating the already-awarded concession on Liberia's timber trade. Whilst
the last report of the Panel of Experts concluded that the criteria for
lifting the sanction have yet to be fulfilled, the Committee presented "A
road map to lifting United Nations Security Council Sanction on logging and
timber trade in Liberia." With the aim for the Government to meet the
preconditions laid down by the Security Council for the lifting of
sanctions, the document underscored the need for the FDA to prepare an
addendum to concession agreements in order to reflect conservation and
environmental concerns. ENRA will continue to closely work with the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the FDA in order to ensure that
environmental concerns are properly reflected in concession agreements.

Long-term garbage disposal and refuse collection conceptualization strategy
meeting begins
Environment and Natural Resources Advisors (ENRA), RRR and Quick Impact
Projects (QIP) attended a meeting during the week that focused on the
conceptualization of a broader, long-term garbage disposal and refuse
collection strategy for the city of Monrovia. The meeting was organized by
HCS and included representative from UNICEF, the Monrovia City Corporation
(MCC) and Youth for Development and Productivity (YODAP), a local NGO. A
framework document for Monrovia's garbage management strategy, which was
developed jointly with the MCC, was presented and discussed at the meeting.
The framework document will be released next week and will serve as the
blueprint for a collaborative venture between public and private sectors for
the city's garbage management policy. Sanitary conditions in increasing
numbers of communities in Monrovia are in appalling state due to overflowing
sewage and uncollected garbage at every street corner. Given the peak of the
raining season, there is increased probability for the outbreak of
water-borne disease amongst the population if the unsanitary situation is
left unchecked.

of water supply, sanitation and environment in Monrovia. The outcome of the
symposium will be presented to government for endorsement.
