Dear All,

Below is a draft status report for the Libraries Working Group for the past
year. Please let me know if you have any comments on this.

Also - may I take this opportunity to urge those of you who have Dublin core
implementations in your libraries to volunteer to give a short report on
these during our working group meeting in Shangahi. There is a slot in the
agenda for a few presentations of about ten minutes duration each - they can
be fairly informal presentations. There is interest in how DC metadata is
used, the decisions made and the lessons learned in the process. Let me
know if you would like to take part.

Libraries Working Group - Status Report 2003-2004

1. Achievements in 2003-2004
There has been very little activity in the Libraries Working Group this
year. The planned work centred largely on the Library Application Profile
and this is some way behind schedule.

2. Comparison of achievements and workplan

Action planned: revision of DC-Lib. Revise in line with UB and WG decisions
and reformat according to CEN DCAP guidelines. Submit to Usage Board for
"registered" status. Who: Robina Clayphan. When: March 2004
Current status: The revision of the AP is currently underway. It should be
available in its updated and reformatted state before the Shanghai meeting.
It should then be available for submission to the UB for approval.

Action planned: add encoding schemes to DC-Lib. This is an on-going task
with encoding schemes being proposed as the need arises. Rebecca Guenther
to provide LC URI if appropriate or "fast track" proposal to UB. Who: all
WG members to propose. When: on-going
Current status: This activity is open to anyone who wishes to propose an
encoding scheme. There is still some uncertainty about the procedures for
this however.

Action: guidance document for implementers of DC-Lib. It should include
examples and be produced as a separate document from DC-Lib for ease of
translation. Who: Rebecca will pass names of volunteers to Robina. When:
after the production of the XML schema.
Current status: There has been no activity on this.

Action: write XML schema for DC-Lib. Who: Robin Wendler. When: after
next revision of DC-Lib. (March)
Current status: There has been no activity on this. It should be confirmed
if this is still required.

3. Comments

The main problem in achieving the workplan is the lack of time and people to
carry out the specified tasks.

The delay in producing the revised application profile has had an impact on
other tasks in the workplan. The remaining tasks should be re-evaluated in
the light of available effort and volunteers should be sought again.

There is no intention to revise the WG Charter this year as it was reviewed
and amended last year. Should any member wish to do so they are free to
propose amendments for the WG to consider.

4. Other news

There is to be a joint session with IFLA at the Shanghai conference. This
activity is to be welcomed: it is seen as meeting one of the objectives of
the Charter in respect of other bibliographic bodies and can be used to
encourage active participation in the remaining work of the group.

Regards,
Robina Clayphan
Chair DC Libraries Working Group
