PhD Studentship
The design and evaluation of user-interfaces for in-car computing
Modern cars are increasingly utilising computing and communications-based technologies to provide a wide range of novel applications to the everyday driver, both driving-related (e.g. travel and traffic information, navigation, collision avoidance/warnings) and non-driving related (e.g. Email, web browsing, entertainment). An opportunity has arisen within the School of Computer Science and IT at the University of Nottingham for a PhD Studentship addressing Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) issues for in-car computing devices. The specific topic for the PhD will involve research relating to one or more of the following areas:
Implications of new technologies in a driving context (e.g. for safety, efficiency, comfort/pleasure).
Design issues for novel user-interfaces (e.g. augmented reality, speech, gesture-driven input devices).
Methods for use in design and evaluation (e.g. the use/validity of driving simulators, setting performance standards).
Students should have a good first degree in computing/computer science (with a strong HCI component), human factors/ergonomics, psychology, or electrical/vehicle engineering (with a strong human factors/ergonomics component).
The studentship is primarily intended for Home students, and provides a stipend of approximately £11,000 per annum (tax-free), plus payment of tuition fees (currently £3010 per annum). European students are welcome to apply, although the nature of the funding scheme only allows payment of tuition fees.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr G Burnett, tel: 0115 951 3357 or Email: [log in to unmask] Further details are also available at: http://www.cs.nott.ac.uk/~geb/research.html.
Applications, with a detailed CV and the names and addresses of two referees, should be sent to Dr G Burnett, School of Computer Science and Information Technology, The University of Nottingham, Jubilee Campus, Wollaton Road, Nottingham, NG8 1BB.
Closing date: 10 September 2004.
