CALL FOR PAPERS

Second Workshop on Space, Spatiality and Technologies ("More Space")
To be held 09-10 (and possibly 11th ) December 2004, Napier University, Edinburgh
The workshop continues its exploration of research into the direct and indirect use of space, place
and spatial concepts and metaphors in the design of technologies. The
workshop is being organised by Phil Turner, Elisabeth Davenport and Susan Turner.

Target audience
============================================================
The workshop is intended for academics and practitioners with experience and interest in a multi-
/ cross-disciplinary approach to thinking and
reasoning about place, spatiality and other forms of existential space.
All participants are encouraged to submit an extended abstract for presentation and discussion at
the workshop.
After the workshop authors will be invited to submit full paper for review and publication in a
book. The book of the first workshop will be appearing soon (Kluwer) and will be available from all
good bookshops.
Themes

The workshop invites papers and presentations that address any of the following perspectives on
space, spatiality and technologies.
* Space. Geometrical and Euclidian spaces. Pure extension. Surfaces and contours. Virtual space.
Spatial metaphors.
* Spatiality. Lived space, personal space, public space, non-space, planned space.
* Technologies. Virtuality, collaborative virtual reality, hybrid spaces. Home, ubiquitous and
wearable technologies. Assistive technologies.
Outline programme

The workshop is scheduled for Thursday and Friday (09-10 December 2004) and Saturday
morning (this is a tentative doctoral consortium which will run providing there is sufficient
interest). Papers will be timetabled to ensure adequate time for discussion, debate and argument.
Keynote speakers will open the sessions on Thursday and Friday.
Submission of proposed papers

4 page extended abstracts are requested. Abstracts should be A4, single spaced in a 12 point
font. Abstracts should be submitted as an e-mail attachment in Word or RTF by Monday 11th
October, 2004. Author names and other attributions should be omitted from the abstract but
should accompany the email. The abstracts should be sent to Fiona Carroll [log in to unmask]
Candidates for the doctoral consortium should follow the instructions for paper submissions but
need not be anonymised and should clearly indicate that they are for the consortium.
Peer review

Abstracts will be blind reviewed.
Authors submitting to the workshop may be asked to review up to three papers
