3. ALT news
3.1 EASA 2004 finalists announced
158 submissions were received from 19 European countries for the
European Academic Software Awards 2004. 30 projects have now been
chosen to attend the finals in Switzerland in September. Ten of these
are UK projects, putting the UK in the lead again. All of the UK
finalists are from ALT member institutes; well done to all!

The EASA 2004 Award Ceremony will be held in Neuchatel on 27
September, followed by the 6th ICNEE conference (see 5.5 below for
details).
3.2 AGM nominations
The call for nominations to the vacancies for Vice-Chair of ALT and
another Trustee (both to serve three years) is available on the web
site at

The deadline for nominations is Wednesday 25 August. Individual
members of at least 12 months' standing are eligible for nomination.

The new trustees will join the Central Executive Committee, which
will meet after the AGM on Wednesday 15 September to appoint the
chairs of other executives and other posts as necessary.

5.6 CREATIVITY IN HE - CALL FOR BIDS
"CREATIVITY - TAUGHT AND CAUGHT"

6.2 New round of NLN Materials development gets underway
Contracts to develop a fourth round of high quality e-learning
materials have now been awarded. This time the free interactive
materials are specifically tailored to the Adult and Community
Learning sector, although they will also be made available to the FE

6.3 New £12m Programme to Support Regional e-Learning Networks
The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) announced that a new
programme which will bring the benefits of e-learning to learners and
teachers across England will begin in September. The Distributed
eLearning programme will establish links between schools, colleges
and universities to encourage progression into higher education,
supporting Government targets for widening participation. For further

6.4 House of Commons Select Committee Report
A report of the Science and Technology Select Committee features
recommendations that will enable research funded by the UK taxpayer
to be made available to a wider readership than the present scholarly
publication system allows.

6.5 UK Colleges to receive free e-Reference books
An agreement signed between JISC and the publisher Thomson Gale will
mean that every college in the UK will be able to gain access to the
free content of twenty-one top electronic reference titles in
perpetuity. The titles included in the Gale Virtual Reference Library
- including the Gale Encyclopaedia of Psychology, the Worldmark
Encyclopaedia of the Nations, the six-volume Gale Encyclopedia of
Science, and many others - have been specially chosen by
representatives of the FE community for their quality and their

6.6 ‘USING ICT TO DEVELOP THE 14 to 19 CURRICULUM’
- is the latest occasional paper from 3T Productions Ltd, discusses
the 14 -19 reforms being suggested by Mike Tomlinson and highlights
the potential of ICT. Previous papers include:
Occasional Paper one - ‘Unlocking the Potential of Information
Learning Technology (ILT)’ - discusses learning styles and how
ICT/ILT can be used to enhance the learning experience.
Occasional Paper two - ‘Adult, Community and Work-Based Learning: e-
learning’ - looks at the issues affecting adult learners and
highlights how the effective integration of e-learning can enhance

7. Invitations to tender

7.1 Formative Evaluation of the e-Learning Programme
Deadline for proposals: 13 August 2004
The JISC wishes to appoint an evaluator(s) to manage and co-ordinate
the formative evaluation of the eLearning Programme. The overall aim
of the evaluation is to ensure that the e-Learning Programme and its
strands result in outcomes with clear benefits for the FE/HE
communities and is value for money. The successful bidder will be
expected to commence work no later than 20 September 2004. The full

7.2 Town Meetings for Regional eLearning Pilot Projects around
Distributed eLearning.
Higher Education Institutions funded by the HEFCE are invited to
attend Town Meetings in September/October 2004 to discuss regional
collaborations of institutions to set up projects to pilot
distributed eLearning tools and services.
7.3 These projects should build on the outputs of previous JISC
programmes and underpin strategic regional development programmes
such as the Lifelong Learning Networks outlined in the joint letter
from HEFCE and the Learning and Skills Council, HEFCE Circular
number 12/2004, published on 3 June 2004.
