3.1 An Introduction to Electronic Group Response Systems (EGRS) and
PRS
21 October 2004, 10:00 – 16:00
Goldsmiths College, London
Members - £85; non-members - £150
Presenters: Michael McCabe, University of Portsmouth
Steve Draper, University of Glasgow
The attention span of students during lectures is often quoted as 15
minutes and during many lectures is probably even less! Interactive
questioning is one way of enlivening lectures by actively engaging
students and breaking up traditional content delivery. Technology can
support this pedagogical approach, but it must be used appropriately.
Electronic group response systems enable students to communicate
their answers to the lecturer via one-way handsets and the lecturer
to display a frequency distribution of responses. The PRS Personal
Response System is a common example. Workshop participants will gain
practical, hands-on experience in the use of PRS and an awareness of
other systems, including those allowing free text responses.
Booking deadline Thursday 7 October 2004

7.3 CAA survey
Bill Warburton, School of Education, University of Southampton is
surveying higher education institutions (HEIs) with the aim of
identifying factors that are bound up with the uptake of computer-
assisted assessment (CAA) in Higher Education. He has adapted the
CAA survey instrument used by the JISC-funded CAA Centre in its' 1999
national survey, and wishes to distribute this via the web to
academic and support staff within this institution (among others). A
key intended output from this research is a set of tools for
implementing CAA in HEIs.
To participate in this survey, which you can reach by clicking on the
link below which takes you to the survey site. There you will be
presented with a choice of two versions of the survey tool- a full
version of the questionnaire (which usually takes around 30-40
minutes), and a shorter 'core' version that is intended for people
who have little direct involvement with CAA or are very short of
time. The survey tool can be reached at
http://www.toia.ac.uk/caasurvey2004.html
The views of people who do not or will not use CAA are as important
as the views of people who do.

8. Invitations to tender
8.1 Invitation to bid for e-learning transformation projects
Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC)
Close date: 26 Aug 2004
http://tinyurl.com/4ngcp
8.2 ITT: Digital Content in the Library and Archive Sector
Deadline for Proposals: 13 Sep 2004, 12:00 PM
The Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL) and the Joint
Information Systems Committee (JISC) have issued an
invitation to tender for a study to assess the current provision of
digitised collections for UK-based researchers in the HE area across
all subject disciplines, and to make recommendations for ways in
which CURL and JISC are well placed to take a lead.
The aim of the study is not to look at born-digital material. The
study should review what has already been digitised, to what
standard(s), what is planned to be digitised, where the gaps are,
what the priorities ought to be for filling those gaps and what
barriers there are to undertake digitisation. Up to £30,000
(including VAT and costs) is available for this study. Tenders should
be submitted no later than noon on Monday 13 September 2004.
The full Invitation to Tender is available on the JISC website at:
http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=funding_dig_con
8.3 UKLIGHT: CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
Expressions of interest are invited from sites wishing to gain access
to UKLight via the extended JANET development network. UKLight
comprises a hub in London, located at the University of London
Computing Centre, with 10 Gbit/s connections to StarLight in Chicago
and NetherLight in Amsterdam. Access to UKLight from institutions
within the UK will be provided by an extended national development
network implemented within JANET. Phase 1 of this development network
is currently being commissioned and consists of connections to
EastNet in Cambridge and Network North West (NNW) in Manchester.
Phase 2 will extend the network to reach CLRC-RAL, YHMAN at Leeds,
and C&NLMAN at Lancaster by early 2005.
Expressions of interest, which need to reach the JISC Executive by 12
noon on 8 October 2004, will be considered by a sub-group of the
UKLight steering committee augmented by invited experts. Feedback
will be provided in early November to all groups who have made
submissions. A Town Meeting will be held at the National e-Science
Centre in Glasgow on Thursday 9 September to provide further
information about UKLight and advice to those intending to submit an
Expression of Interest. Information about the Town Meeting and how to
register for it are available on the NeSC website at
http://www.nesc.ac.uk/esi/events/457/
