The Archive and History Project
of the
Disabled Peoples' Movement
QUESTIONNAIRE TO
INDIVIDUALS
AUGUST 2004
Questionnaire to Individual Disabled People
Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People (GMCDP) has attracted
funding for a 12 month project to plan and find funding to set up a UK
archive of disabled peoples' history.
This archive will be a focus for the storage and retrieval of documents,
films, electronic and other materials that record the rich and diverse
history of disabled people and of the Disabled Peoples' Movement in the UK.
Partner organisations in this work are the Birmingham Coalition of Disabled
People and the British Council of Disabled People.
How the Project came about
In September 2002 GMCDP looked again at its aims, objectives, priorities and
plans. The creation of an archive which records the history and ongoing
development of the Disabled Peoples' Movement was shown as a priority for
GMCDP. BCODP staff recently highlighted the urgent need to collate and
promote the history of the Disabled Peoples' Movement.
This work has already been started by the members of the Coalition of
Disabled People, Birmingham. In early 2003 they began to set up a website
to promote the history and culture of disabled people in schools and
colleges across the City.
This development emerged from consultation with disabled people in
Birmingham about how best to challenge popularly held myths, assumptions and
stereotypes about the disabled peoples' community.
Information about the Project
The 12 month project will:
· Identify, plan and map the history of the Disabled Peoples' Movement
· Identify and collect information relating to organisations
· Draw up a timetable to start collecting materials and set up ways to
continue this in the future
· Identify an accessible place to hold the materials and artefacts
· Seek funding to set up and maintain the archive
At this stage, the project focuses on collection of information relating to
individual disabled people and organisations of disabled people. We want to
find out what role individual disabled people have played in the Disabled
Peoples' Movement, and what materials individual disabled people have kept
concerning the history of disabled people and the Disabled Peoples'
Movement.
To assist us with this, please could you complete this questionnaire as
fully as possible. The information you give will be confidential and stored
in accordance with the Data Protection Act guidelines and only used for this
project.
If you are not comfortable with any of the questions, for example, if you
have been known by any other names, you can leave them blank. Hopefully you
will answer all the questions as fully as you can.
If you would like another format (for example audio tape, Braille, computer
disc, email, large print, CD-ROM or BSL video) or have any queries about
this questionnaire or need assistance to complete it, please contact:
