Sound Postcards from Bow: a Bow Festival 2004 project by Melanie Clifford & Rob Grant
Bow Festival 2004
The Bow Festival 2004 is an Artist-led Public Art Event occurring in London E3 over
the weekend Friday 13th - Sunday 15th August. Co-ordinated by SPACE, it focuses on
the diversity and idiosyncrasies of an Inner City Area, which has been subject to
extensive regeneration efforts over the past 10 years.
Sound Postcards from Bow
In collaboration with Bow residents & workers, Melanie Clifford & Rob Grant will be
exploring the ephemeral aural geography of Bow, London E3 - its public and hidden
places, in buildings, streets and down by the canal. Capturing and sending slight
sound events: known noises or tiny secret sounds; irritating or beautiful.
The project consists of a developing, peripatetic sound postcard correspondence
across Bow, using wireless networking (WiFi), and a free market stall for making
sound postcards from the Roman Road on Sunday 15th 1-6pm. There will also be a sound
installation open Friday 13th & Sunday 15th, 1-7pm, in the bell tower and stairwell
of St. Paul's Church, St. Stephen's Road, London E3.
Melanie Clifford is an artist working with site- and material-specificity in sound,
installation, architectural manipulation, drawing, photography & film.
Rob Grant is a composer and sound artist working with overlooked and disregarded
sounds, drawing attention to the musicality of noises and the noises of musical
instruments.
Bow Wireless
Sound Postcards from Bow is part of the wider Bow Wireless project set up by SPACE,
working with the support of the Arts Council to promote the creative use of wireless
networking.
SPACE: "The Bow Wireless project [is] made up of five new commissions which
integrate innovative and socially engaged practice. They will all be utilising an
open WLAN meshed network set up in Bow this summer. Artists include: ambientTV.net,
Ben Scott, Paula Roush, Melanie Clifford & Rob Grant and Take2030. The Wireless
Project aims to bring this developing technology to local people so that they can

planned for the future to continue life long learning and to leave a legacy in the
community."
