Big businesses have had plenty of time to provide accessible venues for
conferences, etc. It is about time that disabled people recognised the value
of our community's spending power. The lesbian and gay community have
realised that the "pink pound" (the disposable income of its members) is
best spent by purchasing goods, services, etc from fellow members of the gay
community. Why should we keep wasting our time and energy asking repeatedly
for access from companies that are obviously not interested.
I have lived in 6 large cities and visited many more in Britain through
work. Sheffield is one of the worst in terms of access. The main reason it
is so bad is that the Access Officer employed by the City Council seems to
be totally
unaccountable to disabled people and ineffective. There is also no strong,
politicised organisation of disabled people in Sheffield so disabled people
do not have a voice.
