Dear me, seems I didn't respond to this one either!
Autoconf depends on GNU m4 1.4+, so we do indeed need to use just that.
In what way does it hang the build?
Come to think of it, though, I'll modify the way the m4 test is done,
and include a check for gm4 as well.
