If this is fortran-related it may bear on the other problem I'm
seeing, which is apparent failure to see intrinsics in g77.
./configure output in gks/base reads (in part):
checking how to make Fortran and C play nicely... -fno-second-underscore
checking whether g77 supports OPEN specifier READONLY... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic CLOCK... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic ITIME... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic IDATE... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic DATE... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic FGETC... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic FPUTC... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic FLUSH... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic GETENV... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic GETPID... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic LSHIFT... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic SHIFTL... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic RSHIFT... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic SHIFTR... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic ISHFT... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic AND... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic IAND... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic OR... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic IOR... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic LNBLNK... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic LEN_TRIM... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic GETFD... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic GETFILEP... no
checking whether g77 supports intrinsic ISATTY... no
which doesn't look right.
