That's my understanding.

It would probably take one (or all) of us to hand hold someone building
directly from the CVS archive right now. There are a few work around
which aren't really written down (especially on a Mac), mostly to do with
the Tcl/Tk although there are other problems (PGPLOT in general springs to
mind).
If you hold of for a week or so we should be in a better position.
