Subject: Academy for Social Science RAE nominations
RAE 2008: Nomination of Panel Members
The Academy has been asked to nominate possible members for sub-panels and main panels, in relation to the following roles:
1.
international representative (main panel)
2. additional main panel member
3. sub-panel chair
4. sub-panel member
5. research user/practitioner
6. specialist adviser
We are not inviting suggestions for chairs and members of sub-panels, since this is clearly the province of learned societies and associations.
The Academy seeks to gather views and suggestions on individuals with widespread and longstanding experience in the social sciences. In relation to roles 1) and 2), such individuals would be capable of providing overview judgments and ensuring that the interests of the social sciences as a whole are given due consideration (in the context of a methodology that gives primary weight to discipline-based judgments). For 5), the Academy hopes to draw on its reserves of practitioner Academicians.
Individuals with highly specialised and interdisciplinary expertise are also needed as specialist advisers, since there will be no separate panel or sub-panel category for interdisciplinary research output.
With the exception of nominations for international representatives, we expect to forward names of existing Academicians of the Social Sciences. The RAE has asked for reasons for the nomination to be supplied under the following headings: 1) Areas of research expertise 2) Current role and other recent posts of relevance 3) Major esteem indicators 4) Relevant experience of research management and quality assessment 5) Relevant experience of using and commissioning research or as a practitioner
The list of the relevant panels and sub-panels can be found on the RAE web site (www.rae.ac.uk). As they currently stand, the main social science panels are H, I, J and K (although significant social science research will also be assessed in panels B, C and F). In making your nomination, please indicate the panel or specialist field, the relevant role, and whether he or she has agreed to be nominated.
Please submit your suggestions to our Director, Sharon Craig
([log in to unmask]) by Friday September 3.
Yours sincerely,
Ian Forbes
