The editors would like to share with the medical sociology community their pride and delight that the latest ISI rankings place SHI at 4/93 in the 2003 list of sociology journals with an impact factor of 1.761. The only journals to do better are the Annual Review of Sociology, ASR and AJS. We are also in the 'Top 10' to both Public Health and Social Sciences Biomedical. This is very good news for all medical sociologists and for the standing of the field within the discipline - and may even impress a few tenure committees!
The rankings have been somewhat unstable over the last couple of years and we don't want to read too much into one year's figures. However, please allow us our moment of glory and let us thank you for the confidence and goodwill that you have shown towards us over the last few years, both in sending us your best work and in evaluating that of others with the combination of rigour, constructiveness and courtesy that is characteristic of SHI reviewers.
As a community-owned journal, we hope that we can continue to serve you all as you deserve throughout the remainder of our term of office (until October 2006) and that you will give the same support to our successors in due course.
