Ethics, social research and consulting with children and young people
Priscilla Alderson and Virginia Morrow
ISBN 1 904659 07 1 July 2004 Price £12.95
Interest in the ethics of social research has risen over the
past decade. However, there are few reports on the ethics of
consulting with children and young people, although this
field raises many questions. This book examines the ethical
questions raised throughout each project, from planning, to
choosing questions, methods and samples, to reporting and
disseminating the findings. Social and medical research
ethics are compared, and some of the book's key questions include:
Is the project worth doing?
What are the likely harms or benefits?
How can privacy be respected?
What are the ethics of funding and contracts?
How can children and young people be informed clearly
about a project?
Can children give consent?
How might the findings affect children and young people?
This book updates Listening to Children, the 1995 Barnardo's
report, and gives examples from a range of recent projects.
The children's rights based approach considers justice and
respect in projects with all ages of children and young people.
Ethics, social research and consulting with children and
young people will be of interest to anyone who conducts
social research or consults with children and young people,
who supports or funds these projects, or who publishes, reads
or uses the findings of project reports.
