Disability and liveable environments: a comparative study
The project contributes to debates on 'well being and liveability' and
'democratic renewal and citizen engagement', by describing and
evaluating the role and relevance of sub national governance in
responding to, and seeking to enhance, the mobility and movement of
disabled people in the built environment. The research is based on the
premise that a fundamental part of liveability in cities is facilitating
people's independence of access to, and usability of, the built
environment. The project is based on a comparison of governance
practices in Sweden and England.
Four objectives will be addressed using a case study method:
(1). To document, in broad terms, how sub national governance, in Sweden
and England, is organised in relation to responding to the access needs
of disabled people
(2). To explore the micro-practices and processes of governance in
relation to the development, co-ordination, and delivery of accessible
environments
(3). To explore and evaluate the critical role of experiential or user
knowledge and involvement in the governance of accessibility in the
built environment.
(4). Based on this analysis, to make recommendations to the ODPM about
best practice and policy transfer and learning.
The project will be based in the top rated (6*) Department of Geography
at Royal Holloway University of London (www.gg.rhul.ac.uk), and the
student will become a member of the Social and Cultural Geography Group.
The project's supervisor will be Professor Rob Imrie (
<http://www.gg.rhbnc.ac.uk/imrie/imrie.html>
www.gg.rhbnc.ac.uk/imrie/imrie.html). The student will join a department
with a flourishing postgraduate community of over 70 students. The
appointed person will be based, for part of their time, in the
Department of Geography at the University of Lund in Sweden.
