The Department of European Ethnology at Humboldt-University in Berlin

(40 hours weekly)
post-doctoral research position (BAT IIa-Ost) for its research project
Kinship as
representation of social order and social practice: Cultures of
relatedness in the context of social and technological transformation. The
project is part of the
Collaborative Research Unit 640 "Repr"sentationen sozialer Ordnungen im
Wandel", a
long-term cross-disciplinary research program funded by the German Research
Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG). The position is
available
immediately and is tenable until June, 30, 2008.
The successful applicant will conduct ethnographic and comparative
research on kinship practices with families in Turkey and Germany who have
made use of
reproductive technologies or adoption, as well as with transnational
kinship
networks. He or she will conduct intermittent fieldwork in Istanbul, Berlin
and possibly other
sites. As part of a team, he or she will also be responsible for organizing
and maintaining
a research data base, developing comparative research methodologies,
advancing the
project conceptually and theoretically, and preparing the presentation of
research results and reports. Applicants will further collaborate in the
conception and
organization of workshops and conferences, in establishing international
research
co-operations and in tutoring team members conducting Ph.D. research.
Qualifications for this position include:
* A Ph.D. in social or cultural anthropology or European ethnology
* Excellent English language skills, excellent Turkish language skills
will be an asset.
Candidates from non-German-speaking countries are expected to have some
German language competence and to be able to communicate and supervise in
German in due course.
* Extensive knowledge of several of the following fields: social
anthropology and anthropology of kinship, anthropology of knowledge, social
studies of
science and technology, anthropology of reproductive technologies,
epistemology and
methodology of complex comparison.
* Fieldwork experience, preferably in Turkey, the Mediterranean or Arab
regions.
* Good communication skills, organizational talent, and an inclination
for teamwork.
