We seem to have reached that awkward point in a mailing list discussion
where most things that are going to be said have been said but we still
haven't reached a decision. My personal view is that reaching a decision
(any decision!) is more important than reaching a particular decision - in
that spirit I'm swayed by Chris's arguments and more than willing to go
along with his proposal, i.e. that when creating a vCard for an
organisation we should
- place the name into FN
- place the name into the 'additional names' component of N, leaving all
other components blank
- place the name into ORG
e.g.
<![CDATA[BEGIN:VCARD
FN:University of Oxford
N:;;University of Oxford
ORG:University of Oxford
VERSION:3.0
END:VCARD]]>
(Note that I've added VERSION to Chris's original proposal, because it
seems to me that if we're trying to go down the road of being as compliant
with vCard as possible, then we might as well go the whole hog and include
VERSION, which is mandatory in vCard).
Conversely, for parsers the rule is
- if ORG == FN == additional names component of N, then the vCard
represents an organisation
I hope I haven't mis-represented Chris's proposal. Chris, shout if I
have.
Do we have enough concensus to agree on this as a way forward?
