The 18th British Human-Computer Interaction Group Annual Conference is
taking place at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK from 6-10 September
2004. 

HCI 2004 offers an excellent  selection of tutorials on September 6-7,
2004. Please note that the early bird registration deadline is 12th
July.

TUTORIALS PROGRAMME

Monday, 6th September, 2004

T1: (full-day) Effective and Enjoyable Research Careers in HCI

Harold Thimbleby

HCI is multidisciplinary, and driven by users and changing fashions.
It's hard to do good research recognised as such. This tutorial is for
anyone wanting to enjoy doing better.

T2: (full-day) Systemic Task Analysis

Dan Diaper 

Fundamental to HCI, task analysis concerns work performance. Systemic
Task Analysis (STA) has been developed from first principles and
provides an approach compatible with most other task analysis methods.
This tutorial will provide attendees with the necessary theoretical
appreciation and practical tools for them to undertake a basic task
analysis for any HCI application.

T3 (full-day) Evaluating Interactive Products for and with Children 

Stuart MacFarlane, Janet Read, Johanna Hoysniemi and Panos Markopoulos

This tutorial explains, and provides practical experience of, interface
evaluation methods that are appropriate when evaluating for or with
children.  Usability and fun evaluations are considered, as are ethical
issues.

T4 (full-day) Human Factors for Engineers

Carl Sandom and Roger S. Harvey

This tutorial would help systems engineers design complex, interactive
systems that are safer, more secure and easier to use.  This will reduce
accidents, increase system integrity and enable more efficient process
operations.    

T5 (Half-day - morning) Improving Usability in Mobile Interaction: A
User-Centerd Design Perspective 

Lada Gorlenko and Roland Merrick

Making the mobile world usable - why is it difficult to get it right?
Join us to adopt the user-centred view on mobility and learn the basics
of mobile usability.

T6 (Half-day - afternoon) Using Design Space Analysis to facilitate
interaction design meetings 

Paul Englefield

Interaction design meetings can be tough to attend and tougher to
facilitate. This tutorial presents practical facilitation techniques
using design space analysis to provide structure while promoting
creativity and rigour. 

T7 (full-day) A fast track to innovation: New Methods for discovering
applications and estimating user benefits 

William Newman

Innovators in interactive technologies will learn advanced methods for
identifying applications and their performance criteria, leading the way
to innovative solutions that solve real user problems and deliver
measurable benefits.
