The canonical way of doing that is to use config.guess, which (I'm not
positive) is distributed and maintained as part of libtool. The
config.guess that comes with itcl (in directory config/) produces
nothing on OSX, because it's old, and predates OSX.
I think that, if you put a AC_CANONICAL_BUILD macro in configure.ac,
then autoreconf will helpfully place an up-to-date config.guess in your
directory, and define variables 'build', 'build_cpu', 'build_vendor'
and 'build_os' for you to test and/or substitute at your pleasure.
