Research Fellows for National Evaluation of NHS Genetic Service Investments
(in partnership with the Centre for Developing and Evaluating Lifelong Learning)
Applications are invited for two research fellowships to work on a contract from the Department of Health to evaluate English NHS investments in genetic services following the June 2003 White Paper, Our Inheritance, Our Future. The project will involve providing training, advice and support to internal evaluators, together with a wider evaluation of the programme through the reanalysis of internal data and both project and programme stakeholder interviews.
Candidates for both posts must have a PhD or equivalent experience. Post A requires a knowledge of organizational and management processes and structures, which may come from a background in social science, business studies or health services research. Post B requires a familiarity with evaluation methodologies, likely to have been gained in health, education or other applied social science research areas. Both posts will require extensive travel throughout England. Candidates may apply for both, but must indicate a preference in their letter of application.
Salaries will be in the range £18,893 - £27,174 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. These posts are available from 1 September 2004, or as soon as possible thereafter, until 31August 2008. Closing date is Monday 16 August 2004. Interviews will be held on Wednesday 25 August.
Postdoctoral Fellowships in Social Science or Humanities
Applications are invited for two postdoctoral fellowships on the interdisciplinary research programme, 'Biorisks and Society', funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The successful candidates will be expected to carry out research on a specified topic within the framework of the programme and to contribute to its general scholarly activities. The possible projects are entitled: 'Are we doomed? Writing Epidemics in the late 20th and early 21st centuries', looking at the literary treatment of epidemic disease; 'Hybrids * between the monstrous and the modern', looking at the place of hybrids in debates about the nature of modernity; 'The Enlightenment and Darwinism: Contextualizing Bio-Science', looking at the reception of evolutionary thought in 19th century popular culture; 'Dangerous Heredity', examining the debates during the period 1890-1930 between biological and social thinkers about the causes of deviant social behaviour.
Candidates must have completed a PhD, or be awaiting the final examination of a submitted thesis, at the time of application. It is anticipated that one fellowship will be awarded to a candidate from a social science background and one to a candidate from a humanities background, both broadly defined to include interstitial fields like law.
These posts are available immediately until 31 March 2006. The starting salary will be in the range £18,893 - £21,010. Closing date is Friday 20 August 2004. Interviews will be held during the first week in September.
