As I am sure you are all aware the European Social Forum 2004 takes place in London from the 14th until the 17th of October 2004. (http://www.fse-esf.org/en/). The ESF is a unique opportunity where social movements, trade unions, NGOs, refugees, peace and anti-imperialist groups, anti-racist movements, environmental movements, networks of the excluded and community campaigns from Europe and the world can come together to discuss how to achieve global social justice for all and debate ways of making 'another world possible'.
The 2004 ESF programme will consist of hundreds of discussion and debate meetings as well as cultural events over the four days. The website proclaims, "You can contribute to shaping the Programme by proposing and organising meetings and cultural events"
[From the website]
There are the three kinds of meetings which will take place at the ESF; Plenaries, seminars and workshops.
Plenaries are organised by the whole ESF process. Seminars and workshops result from proposals of participating organisations.
Seminars: Seminars at the ESF provide an excellent opportunity for different organisations across Europe working on similar issues to come together to network, develop ideas, proposals and interlink for effective action. On previous experience there are likely to be many more seminars proposed than space allows, so organisations are strongly encouraged to work together to propose seminars jointly or to merge seminars once they see proposals on the ESF website. In the event that there are still too many proposals for the space available, the ESF will be obliged to merge seminars, as in previous years. Seminars that stand alone - are just supported by one organisation - will have to be given least priority for space. Organisations are asked not to propose more than five seminars. Simultaneous interpretation is provided at seminars. How the meeting is run is decided by the participating organisations themselves.
Workshops: A workshop is likely to be a smaller meeting, probably organised by just one organisation. No simultaneous translation is provided by the ESF.
(Timescale: proposals for seminars and workshops are open now and will close on August 1st.)
Now I realise that this event happens during (and after) the Exeter conference and only a month after Berlin, but I wondered if there would be any interest amongst those on this mailing list to propose a seminar or a workshop. It may provide a useful forum to consolidate some of the material presented at Berlin and Exeter. Moreover, it might provide a useful opportunity to get feedback on the work we are undertaking within community psychology from people working in other academic and activist areas.
I am well aware that a hot sunny Friday afternoon is not the best time to post this, especially in light of the fact that the deadline for proposals is Sunday!
I can't seem to find anything similar to this that has already been proposed (but please double check this http://www.fse-esf.org/en/programme/list.php?guesswhatshow=on&stage=1)
On the plus side, the proposal form is *very* short (http://www.fse-esf.org/en/programme/form.php) and I'd be prepared to work with anyone else who wanted to move forward on this. However, I also realise that the timing both in terms of October, and now [2 days before the deadline] is not ideal.
Cheers
Miles Thompson.
