I don't know, and it may be the wrong question. The version currently
on my machine (as of last night OSX 10.3.3) is 1.4.2_03, but this might
change the next time I run Software Update.
Sun doesn't distribute Java for OSX, Apple does, presumably under an
arrangement with Sun, and you're not really encouraged to start playing
games with multiple versions.
I'll have a look round Apple's developer pages for any pointers to
supported ways of having multiple installations, and ask on some list
or other. However, the upshot is that we can't really make any
assumptions about what Java release version is on an OSX system, nor
reasonably ask users to change it.
