Yes, you are right there. Some of the earliest video recorders also used
steel bands. These were just used for action replays during football matches
in the late '60s and early 70's IIRC. Very dangerous as they ran at very
high speed and you had to weld the tapes together.
I believe that the BBC still has one at Evesham.
