In my experience working as a research assistant is extremely demanding,
especially as most projects have a finite amount of time to run, thus
increasing pressure to work harder. This may not be ideal while studying,
but it does obviously depend upon the job in question.
To get a job in an academic or clinical area try looking at
http://www.jobs.ac.uk/sector/psychology/ and there you can search by
locality, as well as for a specific type of job. Also look at
Universities/Hospitals in the area that you wish to be on their job
vacancy pages as often small jobs won't make it to the national press
adverts due to costs.

I work as a technician in a psychology department and my department kindly
fund my PhD research. It's not ideal as I cannot do the research full
time (in fact I have to work full time) but I do get a research day once a
week and time off for testing sessions. It's not ideal but it works well
enough for me.
Good Luck!
