I'm working on a somewhat similar question in regard to the
continental Reformation, namely the status of concilliarism
in 1530. I've found Oakley's THE CONCILIARIST TRADITION
(OUP, 2003) helpful but a stiff study for me. His remarks
concerning two types of papal authority (circa page 6) shed
some light on my problems and may be helpful in dealing
with your question.
That said, I tend to find these issues what I would term
"Watergatian"; that is, they seem to hinge on questions
of who knew what and when did they know it. Maybe I
am merely old and befuddled, but I do not believe the
final word has been written on either your issue or mine.
(If the final word HAS been written on my issue, would
somebody have mercy on me and tell me what that word is?)
Bemusedly baffled,
Frank
