5. News
5.1 UK Web Archiving Consortium to boost lifespan of key web
materials
The UK Web Archiving Consortium (UKWAC) aims to expand the lifespan
of website materials from around 44 days (the same life expectancy as
a housefly) to a century or more. The UKWAC will work, with the
permission of rights holders, on an experimental system for archiving
selected key UK websites - ensuring that invaluable scholarly,
cultural and scientific resources remain available for future
generations. The UKWAC will run for an initial period of two years,
during which approximately 6,000 websites will be collected and
archived.

5.2 Archive of medical journals to go online
An archive of medical journals, some dating back more than 125 years,
will be made freely available on the Internet.
The Wellcome Trust, the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC),
and the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) are joining forces to
digitise the complete backfiles of a number of important and
historically significant medical journals. The digitised content will
be made freely available on the Internet - via PubMed Central
(http://www.pubmedcentral.gov/ or http://www.pubmedcentral.org/)
Further information about this project can be found at:

5.3 Computer science teaching tool
Leeds Metropolitan University has recently setup a spinout software
company to help develop and distribute a number of CASE modeling
products. QSEE-Technologies Ltd (http://www.qsee-technologies.com)
have developed a single environment that currently supports fifteen
CASE techniques, including UML, DFDs, ERDs, Structure Charts, XML
Schema Models, Rich Pictures, RT-Yourdon, Flow Charts, State
Transition Diagram etc. The tool itself is very small and can be
downloaded and used immediately (see http://www.qsee-
technologies.com/downloads.htm). No charge for home use, therefore
students can download and use the tool at home for free. The tool is
easily distributed across networks etc. since it is not reliant on
other software (except IE for the help) and is statically linked.
Leeds Met Uni would appreciate your views about this product,
especially for use within teaching. If you have any queries or
comments please email Mark Dixon [log in to unmask]
5.4 Radio Research Database
The BUFVC is now hosting the Radio Research Database (RRDB) on behalf
of Bournemouth University. The RRBD aims to contain a record of all
current radio-centred academic research in the UK. Users have the
opportunity to enter their own research details, with entries being
moderated by Bournemouth University. Entries are welcomed from
academics, MPhil/PhD students or Masters students. The RRDB is the
first of a number of information resource collaborations being
