SYMPOSIUM ANNOUNCEMENT:

UNIVERSITY OF EXETER
HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY RESEARCH GROUP
Talking Landscapes - On Geography and the Practice of Oral
History
Thursday 8th July 2004
Amory Building, University of Exeter
This FREE event is sponsored by the AHRB
At the beginning of the Millennium, work in historical
geography has increasingly sought to emphasise the social
construction of geographical knowledge. This has resulted
in a flourishing of qualitative methodologies within the
sub-discipline, seeking to problematize existing
meta-narratives, and instead sketch a world that is
contingent, and where knowledges are situated.
Despite this however, oral history remains a much
under-used and under-valued technique within historical
geography. Through this day-long symposium, we are seeking
to explore the potential of oral history as a means of
geographical enquiry, reviewing the extent to which the
technique has been used, and sketching space for how such
an oral approach might proceed
Contributors include:
Adrian Bailey (Exeter); Barbara Bender (UCL); Kelly
Elswood-Hollard (Exeter); David Harvey (Exeter); Hayden
Lorimer (Glasgow); Andrew Morrison (Nottingham); Caitriona
Ni Laoire (Cork); Mark Riley (Exeter); Iain Robertson
(Gloucestershire); and Adam Swain (Nottingham)
