Hi Tim,
the SoG problem is probably because it doesn't use AST to read FITS image
headers (just some port of WCSTools libraries to Java) and it has a really
bad FK5 fixation (like Skycat).
I agree that the problem getting GAIA to save the image to disk as
anything other than a native representation looks like an AST issue/bug.
