Crumbs, I had completely forgotten there was perl business in the
ARRAY package. Since I went to considerable trouble to make sure
that the only dependencies for a normal build in JNIAST and JNIHDS
are java and ant, I ought to do it here as well. In the next day
or two I will do something about this on the release branch at
least, so it becomes a non-issue.

JAI is a known dependence - that should be (and probably is) documented
in whatever instructions there are to people wanting to build starjava.

As a temporary measure, can you bypass the HDX test
and see if the other unit tests go OK?
(e.g. replace
<target name="test"
depends="run-tests"
description="-> run JUnit tests"/>
by
<target name="test"
description="-> run JUnit tests"/>
in hdx/build.xml).
