Ethnic Group Statistics: a guide for the collection and classification
of ethnicity data
In January 2004 the Office for National Statistics (ONS) produced
'Ethnic group statistics - A guide for the collection and classification
of ethnicity data'. The guidance offers a multi-faceted approach to the
collection of ethnicity, religion and national identity data. ONS will
explain why this new approach has been adopted, as well as giving
examples of how the ethnicity guidance can be used in practice. John
Curtice will examine how national identity has been measured in recent
UK academic studies, and the degree to which measures suggest the
profile of national identity has changed. He will consider what
influence national identity has on people's attitudes towards the UK
constitution, Europe and people from minority ethnic groups.
Speakers:
Lucy Haselden (Office for National Statistics) and John Curtice
(University of Strathclyde) will be giving the seminar, which will be
chaired by Patten Smith (BMRB International) with Pam Smith (Centre for
Racial Equality) as discussant.
Date and time:
Tuesday 25 May 2004, 5:00pm (tea from 4:30pm), ending at about 7pm.
Admission and venue:
The seminar is free, and will take place at the Royal Statistical
Society headquarters, 12 Errol Street, London, EC1 (see
<http://www.rss.org.uk/> www.rss.org.uk for a map of directions). It
starts with coffee/tea at 4:30pm. There is no need to book: simply turn
up on the evening.
The Royal Statistical Society and Social Research Association look
forward to welcoming you.
