I find this really interesting in the sense of what sort of distinction should be made between purchase and open source software? If someone is posting encouraging people to buy something then it seems reasonable to ask for limitations. But if someone is posting inviting us to look at open source software whose progress is enabled by list discussions is it really reasonable to limit it? I think this question asks us to consider how to navigate new questions around "promotion" and "marketing" that open source brings up. Given that so many open source "products" are researched via listservs of different types and have no funding for incubation labs, what occurs when we limit the interchanges? Just some food for thought.

Subject: Use of list to disseminate product/service info
Greetings,
I am echoing the sentiment of others who appreciate hearing about
potentially useful sources of information but do not want qual-software
to be overused by software developers promoting their products and
services. So, I think I like the idea of asking developers to limit this
type of activity to sharing URLs with the list. List members can then go
to the developer's site if they wish to access newsletters or other
on-line information, and the qual-software list itself can remain an
exchange of ideas in response to specific questions and member needs.

Dear all
in response to the interesting discussions re the use of qual-software
for
disseminating software developer news letters etc. We at the CAQDAS
netowrking project are currently discussing this and reviewing the
various
options and will get back to you all with a policy statement soon....
however... it would be useful to have a broader idea of people's
opinions on
this - the list is for software users - so those of you who haven't yet
commented...what do you all think...? let us know
thanks
Christina
