To the best of my knowledge all minidisc recorders and all memo recorders
(i.e. the small solid state recorders made by Olympus, Sony, etc.) have
plug-in power i.e. the recorders supply power through the mic jack to power
the microphone. As long as the recorder is powered (see battery indicator on
the recorder) then the microphone is powered. So you want a plug-in power
microphone. Sony makes them as do many other companies.
There may actually be issues using a self-power microphone with some of
these devices but if you haven't experienced any problems you're probably
okay. Microphone batteries usually last quite a long time. The manual that
came with the microphone should tell you the expected life and that should
let you estimate how often you will need to replace the battery. If you want
to check the the power level I'd buy a battery tester. Testers are cheap.

microphones we are using with our minidisc recorders use batteries but they
have no indication of the battery life. Does anyone know of a microphone
that has a good visible indicator of when the battery is running low? We
need something that will work for one-to-one interviews but also for group
sessions.
