Imagining sex and reproduction in 17th Century England
Dr Laura Gowing
History Department, King's College, London
Title: 'Imagining Sex and Reproduction in 17th -Century
England'
In a time without accurate representations of the body's interior,
stories, jokes, and metaphors were central to popular
understandings of sex and reproduction. The resulting ideas are
often starkly different to those of today, but sometimes also
suprisingly continuous. Using the archival evidence of popular
speech and oral culture, this session will explore the flexibility,
complexity and tensions of women's bodies in pre-industrial
England.
