medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Good day, eh?
I thank Fr. Ambrose for his help in this.
I wish to raise another very minor point in regard
to the IC XC formation of the fingers.
I encourage list members to try it themselves. At
least some of you may discover what I discovered.
I boxed in my (misspent) youth. I find the thumb
over ring finger X difficult to achieve now that my
bodily decay is catching up to my mental one.
Thus it may also be the case, in addition to
Fr. Ambrose's most plausible explanation, that
some iconographers were simply using what they
saw as a guide, and what they saw was a priest
with arthritic hands. A mundane explanation perhaps,
but none the less possible for all that.
Regards to all!
Frank
