Hi, Alison,
Thanks for sending me the notice about Special Collections News for this
month with the illustration of Constantine's Convoluted Stove.
And thanks for putting in a link to my site. I cannot help thinking, though,
that your readers might find it more helpful to be given a direct link to
the pages on Oakworth. This is:
http://www.victorianturkishbath.org/_6DIRECTORY/AtoZEstab/Houses/Oakworth/OakworthEng.htm
If you type this instead of copy and paste, there's an underline after org/
and before 6DIRECTORY.
It is easy to go on to the rest of the site if anyone if interested
further.
By a strange coincidence, I was trying to pluck up courage to ask you for
more help but hesitated as you have already been to so much trouble on my
behalf. But it's the result of getting those fascinating plans you sent me.
As you will have noticed, Constantine sends two versions of the plan (one
with adjoining furnace room and one with the furnace room in a basement) and
the page of amounts seems more like a quotation than an invoice. However, as
you can see from the above page on my site, both of these are different from
the plan sent to me by the descendant of the builder.
I suspect that, since I know that the Turkish bath was added two years after
the house was built, the bath was one of the versions on your plans.
Would it be at all possible to send me a photocopy of the relevant page of
the draft auctioneer's catalogue which purports to describe the rooms and/or
the "board" -- what is this? -- which seems to describe the contents. If the
Turkish baths are included here then I can then check these against the
plans to determine which one was actually built. They are listed as items 85
and 90 on page 8 of your catalogue.
With all best wishes,
Malcolm
