Programme

9:15 Registration, Coffee/Tea & Biscuits

9:45 Welcome to the Championing Improved Practice Conference
Jenny Wright, Director of the Public Health Resource Unit, Oxford

10:00 From Research to Practice: the evidence pipeline
Paul Glasziou, Department of Primary Health Care & Director, Centre
for Evidence-Based Practice, Oxford

10:30 Parallel Sessions

Session 1 - e-learning
Take a tour of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), a multi-media CD-ROM and
workbook new from CASP and discuss how this resource could be used in your
organisations' learning initiatives to supplement your work.

EBP is a comprehensive journey through the skills, knowledge and resources
underpinning the practice of 'evidence-based' health and social care.
Sections include finding the evidence, critical appraisal of qualitative,
quantitative and economic research evidence, management of change and
implementation of evidence in practice. EBP is designed on the interactive
and fun CASP model of evidence-based learning methods utilising multi-media,
video streaming, self-assessment exercises, a full glossary of terms and
links to key Internet sites.

Session 2 - Patient & Public Involvement in Research
An introduction to PHRU's work to support this important area for
involvement

PHRU's Patient and Public Involvement Programme contends that Critical
appraisal and the judicious commissioning and application of research in
practice is as much the domain of patients and the public as it is of
professional researchers and practitioners. In this workshop we will
discuss the involvement of patients and the public throughout all stages of
the research cycle, and demonstrate a range of tools and approaches that
PHRU has developed to support involvement.

This workshop will be of interest to researchers, practitioners and
commissioners who have an interest in involving patients and the public in
evidence based practice.

12:00 Lunch in the hotel restaurant

13:00 Parallel Sessions

Session 1 - CASPuk Calling all 'CASPers'
CASP has trained 1000's of people throughout the UK and across the globe
with the help of CASP International and its members.

The 'CASPuk collaboration' would like to invite you to this session which
aims to: identify the network of UK 'CASPers', map CASP-type activity in the
UK, discuss the benefits of such a collaboration, formulate aims and
objectives and discuss mechanisms of communication to facilitate
inclusivity.

This session is aimed at people already involved in planning the
implementation of, or facilitating, CASP-type training within their
organisation, profession or locality. If you are involved in running these
sessions we would like to invite you to discuss the benefits of such a
collaboration and become a member of CASPuk.

Session 2 - Development in training and support for Patient and Public
Involvement - Part 1: Where are we now?
Updates on PHRU's work, and participatory session on their applications.

The Patient and Public Involvement Programme aims to promote communication
and partnership between patients and the public, and professionals. This
workshop will review recent applications of IMPACT, a programme that aims to
foster partnerships at a strategic level. We will present a case study as a
basis for discussing how IMPACT can be used as part of a wider programme of
support for patient and public involvement at all levels

14:30 Coffee/Tea Break

15:00 Parallel Sessions

Session 1 - Management of Change
An interactive workshop that will cover putting evidence into practice
through understanding the psychology of change and change management
processes.

This session is a taster for a workshop on change management that we have
developed and successfully piloted. The workshop will address the
psychology of change and managing transitions. We will also describe the
different tools and techniques that are available to support change, and
plans for taking the workshop forward. As with all our CASP products the
workshop is highly interactive and will be fun.

Session 2 - Developments in training and support for Patient and Public
Involvement - Part 2: Where next?
Participatory session considering recent approaches to support for patient
and public involvement and their applications.

As patient and public involvement in organisations develops, the need to
support that involvement grows. In this workshop we will discuss two more
recent approaches: The use of patient stories to promote partnership; and
the applications of learning sets in this field.

Session 3 - Gov! Game
Your chance to play a tool, developed by the Public Health Resource Unit,
that gets groups talking and thinking about the principles of clinical
governance. The game aims to raise awareness of the main topics/areas of
clinical governance. GOV! promotes useful discussion and develops awareness
of important concepts.

It provides an opportunity for participants to:
* consider the issues surrounding clinical governance, both the
problems that might be encountered and topics for strategic planning.
* work together as a group to develop solutions for the problems
encountered during the game.
* Identify the broader lessons learned in working through the issues
raised.
* engage in discussion about the concept of clinical governance.
