Just to play devil's advocate, I'm going to disagree with the personal
interest angle. It's helpful, for sure, and I'm sure we all enjoy finding
colleagues who are really keen to know more about *our* area. These are the
people happy to chat over coffee, and who run away with new ideas. They'll
pick up each piece of new technology, play with it, tell others about it.
And often, remain in blissful ignorance of any sound pedagogic rationale
for what they're doing.
To date, the best 'outcomes' I've seen have been those with the biggest
problems, real or imagined. When these people have access to recipes and
chefs and, to extend the metaphor, are starving for want of a solution,
they *really* change their practice.
