The Faculty of Sociology at St. Petersburg State University with co-partners
from University of Western Ontario, Canada, University of California, Los
Angeles, and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Comparative Research in the
Social Sciences, Vienna, Austria, with the financial support from HESP of
the Open Society Institute propose a three-year Project

Nationalism and Ethnicity in Contemporary Social Sciences: Challenges for
Research and Teaching.

During the Project participants will be involved in 3-week contact summer
sessions, fall and spring workshops in 2004, 2005, and 2006, as well as in
numerous inter-session activities. The Project's mission is to form a
research and teaching network of the social scientists from Eastern and
Central Europe, Baltic States, NIS, and Mongolia for debating burning issues
in the field of ethnicity, discussing theoretical approaches to the problems
of nationalism in the time of new European and World order, developing a
methodological framework for teaching and new pedagogical techniques,
acquiring skills in policy making.

The organizers are looking forward very much to constituting a group of 26
young academics from the region to work together in contact sessions and
inter-sessions activities during the Project period with clear understanding
to have a self-sustained International Network of Academic Partnership after
all Project activities to be completed.

Eligibility
Young faculty members teaching social sciences dealing with the subject from
East and Central Europe, Baltic States, countries of the former Soviet
Union, and Mongolia who want to work together during the Project and beyond.

Selection
At the first round documents of application package will be reviewed.
Second, selected participants will be interviewed on-line or by telephone.

Costs
Accommodation, meals, cultural program, educational materials, tuition fees
are fully covered by the

Project
The Project would also try to cover all reasonable travel expenses; no
business class flights or first class in the train

(500 words) developed or taught by you in the discipline of the Project.
