The BEARR Trust lecture for 2004 marks the launch of the paperback edition of
STALIN: The Court of the Red Tsar
by
Simon Sebag Montefiore
On behalf of the BEARR Trust, I would like to invite you most warmly to this lecture by Simon Sebag
Montefiore, to be held at 6.15 p.m. on 21 June at the Franklin Wilkins Building, King's College, 150
Stamford Street, SE1 (just off the big roundabout by Waterloo Bridge). The lecture will be chaired
by Professor Robert Service of St Antony's College, Oxford, who has himself written biographies of
Lenin and is working on one of Stalin. This should provide an opportunity to compare the methods of
the two historians in their dealings with Russian sources in current conditions. The lecture will be
followed by a short reception in the adjacent restaurant.
Simon Sebag Montefiore's remarkable history of Stalin and his court was a Sunday Times top ten
best-seller when it was published in hardback in 2003 and received outstanding acclaim:
'an extraordinary book
Anne Applebaum, The Evening Standard
'Grimly brilliant'
Andrew Marr, The Daily Telegraph
'spectacular..... an impressive and compelling work'
Philip Mansel, The Spectator
STALIN: THE COURT OF THE RED TSAR is the enthralling, intimate and accessible story of the secret
world of the dictator and his court that shows him as he has never been seen before. Based on
massive research from Moscow to Petersburg, from the Black Sea to Buenos Aires, filled with
fascinating new materials from Stalin's own newly-opened papers, unpublished memoirs, and the
author's interviews with his surviving intimates, and visits to his still-closed houses and palaces,
STALIN: THE COURT OF THE RED TSAR casts a new light on the character of Stalin himself. It brings to
the subject the texture of real humanity that was missing from traditional biographies of Stalin.
