Majority of Russians Say Press Freedom Exists in Russia
MOSCOW, May 19. Fifty-nine percent of Russians feel that freedom of the
press exists in Russia, and 20% of those are fully confident that such is
the case, according to a poll conducted by the company ROMIR Monitoring in
April. Of those questioned, 15% also felt that freedom of the press was
currently excessive and crossed the boundary to being all-permissive. Those
who felt that freedom of the press does not exist, to a greater or lesser
extent, numbered 24% of respondents.
Young people were the most confident that press freedom exists (70%), while
the highest percentage of doubters (30%) was among people 35-44 years old.
People over 60 (22%), and people with low incomes (20%), were the most
likely to categorize press freedom as excessive or all-permissive.
