DAY FORUM ANNOUNCEMENT & TIMETABLE
Biographies of London Life AD 1600 to the Present: Archaeologies of
Londoners, Their Lives and Their Possessions

A One Day Forum at the Museum in Docklands, London, Friday June 11 2004

On Friday June 11th, the Museum of London launches a major new research
programme focusing on studying Londoners through their changing material
culture from the 17th AD century onwards. This programme
titled 'Biographies of London life', has been developed through a Museum
of London working committee in partnership with the University of Bristol
and La Trobe University, Melbourne.

Together with our partners, the Museum of London has produced a scoping
document, which sets out a research framework and strategy. This document,
together with the third in the series of Museum of London Research Matters
considering aspects of London's post medieval archaeology, will be
launched at the forum. The purpose of this day is for the project team to
introduce the project and to generate discussion and comment from
specially invited colleagues, and from the wider archaeological community
and other disciplines.

The Museum of London curates the largest and most important collection of
post-medieval material culture available for analysis in Britain. These
collections represent a resource not only for the archaeology of London,
but also the archaeology from London - as so much of this material is
found at archaeological sites around the world.

The day will bring together members of the project team and advisory
group, and others interested in London's historical archaeology. In
particular, the day will explore work that aims to integrate documentary
and material sources of evidence to explore the details of peoples lives
in this world city in the past. The project aims to explore the diversity
of post-medieval urban life: ethnicity, class, differences of gender and
occupation, the 'textures' of London life in global perspective.

This meeting will offer the first opportunity to begin this process of
research. It will be held at the Museum in Docklands, No.1 Warehouse, West
India Quay, Hertsmere Road, London E14 4AL, between 10.00am and 4.00pm.

Colleagues who would like to attend the day should contact Nigel Jeffries
on 0207 566 9323, or by email [log in to unmask], by May 21st.
