For some reason, I didn't get the originating message so glad to get the
response.
I think that you should look at the advice issued by the Information
Commissioner on CCTV.
Personally, I would rather take the issue described if there is a potential
danger to staff - I assume this is the reason for this? - and face the wrath
of the Office of the IC, then live with injury or death of a colleague on my
conscience.
I am sure the IC will give advice if they are asked.

If you want to see a large reaction, try posting your question on the
Data Protection list !!!
Simply speaking, however, the photograph would be covered by the DPA and
the issues would be -
the purpose for which the image was recorded
whether publishing it in this way would be covered by that purpose
whether the person's privacy (or the person's family's privacy) was
being infringed
whether the action was proportionate to what is trying to be achieved
There is also a fair processing issue, which would probably suggest that
you would need to inform the individual before doing it.
Off hand, it doesn't feel like a good place to be going !

Subject: Use of photographs
Hello List
We have had a few incidents lately involving a member of the public
causing substantial damage to the council building. It has been
suggested that for security reasons a photograph from CCTV of this
person is posted onto the intranet (not website) warning staff about the
potential dangers of associating with him.
This doesn't sit comfortably with me but I don't know whether there are
any elements of data protection etc that should prevent this photograph
and warning from being posted or whether it is the right thing to do.
What do you think? Any comments would be useful.
Thank you very much
Rachel
